It is bad enough that the people in Nashville, Tennessee that were trying to get an English-Only ordinance passed were working with groups with ties to white supremacists. Now it has been learned that the local Sheriff who has built a reputation of going after immigrants, particularly brown ones, is catching hell for speaking at the dinner in town sponsored by the Council of Conservative Citizens a few months ago. Sheriff Daron Hall is giving everyone the often repeated mantra that always comes up when prominent people hook up with these clowns that they didn’t know what kind of group they were. A cop is trained to be observant, so how much wiggle room should this guy get, honestly? What’s more, thanks to him and other Democratic elected officials in town pushing that 287(g) nonsense, behind a drunk driver killing two white people in town, close to 4,000 Hispanics have been deported behind minor infractions. That’s what has the C of CC crowing, which is what they do, so that’s not our issue. Our thing is that we should see from our elected officials a committment to enforcing the law to protect all of us, not just a segment of society. They said 287(g) would do that, and they were trusted enough to allow it through. Now, since Sheriff Hall has betrayed that trust by turning it into a race war, he needs to step aside.
Tennessean
Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall was a featured speaker for a nationalist white hate group that condemns blacks, immigration and is in favor of preserving the country’s “cultural and racial integrity.”
Hall spoke about his department’s controversial 287(g) federal immigration program at a Nov. 22 dinner of the Council of Conservative Citizens held at the Piccadilly Cafeteria on Murfreesboro Pike in Nashville.
The Council of Conservative Citizens opposes “mixing of the races,” homosexuality and nonwhite immigration — legal and illegal, according to its statement of principles on its Web site. The St. Louis-based group stems from the the racist, anti-integrationist White Citizens’ Councils of the 1950s and 1960s, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
Hall says he didn’t know anything about the group’s views and figured it was one of many local organizations that request him as a guest speaker to hear about the immigration enforcement program.
“To be honest, I had no idea,” Hall said. “The person doing the scheduling for me had no reason to believe that this was such a group. I regret that we didn’t know. I surely don’t want that reputation.”
Hall’s appearance was touted in the group’s newsletter, the Citizens Informer, which stated that, under his leadership, “4,000 illegal aliens have been removed the streets of Davidson County, thus reducing crime. The meeting drew the largest attendance in 12 years, with many youth in attendance.”
Hall’s cameo was first reported on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hatewatch blog. The center subscribes to hate group publications.
Hall’s presence at that function is “shocking” and raises questions about his motives regarding the immigration program, said Elliott Ozment, a Nashville immigration lawyer who was dismissed from the sheriff’s immigration advisory council.
“This incident calls for some serious accounting of his conduct,” Ozment said. “It calls into question the integrity of the entire program.”
Hall says he receives numerous requests to speak about the immigration program. Last year, Hall says, he had at least one speaking engagement per week.
“I’ve worked hard my entire life to build relationships with diversity,” Hall said. “Remember, I’m an elected Democrat, and I did not want to just talk to Democrats. I saw ‘Conservative’ in the title and didn’t think anything about it.”
Time for this sheriff to goTim Chavez, Political SalsaNashville Sheriff Daron Hall was the featured speaker at a gathering of a White supremacist group, confirming the racism behind his motivations to bring the heinous 287g deportation program to Music City, reports The Tennessean. Hall sold the 287 program in Nashville — which is supported by his fellow Democrats in Mayor Karl Dean and Congressman Jim Cooper — with lies that it was meant only to round up undocumented immigrants with a criminal record. Instead, more than 3,500 people have been deported after being arrested for things like fishing without a license. These human beings have jobs and families. And one of the criminal cases Hall cited to sell the program politically was the murder of two white residents. But the undocumented immigrant was easily exonerated by a Nashville jury. Still, 287g remains. Hall, in the newspaper article, reverted to more lies — saying he did not know he was speaking before a White supremacist group and blaming his appearance there as the fault of his scheduler. Yet the group says Hall is the only politician to appear before the body in its history. Hall’s racism should be an embarrassment to a civil rights city as Nashville, and so should the support of 287g by other Nashville Democrats. Taxpayers also are being cheated. All the resources going to arrest, process and incarcerate people who are no threat to this nation steers law enforcement away from needing crime prevention. And any law enforced by the color of one’s skin and the accent of one’s voice is simply racist. Immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility. Would we bring the administration of Social Security to counties simply because the federal government cannot properly manage it? Of course not. So why are undocumented immigrants so targeted? We know why. SSA is so broken in its administration that I had to wait 18 months to get disability payments for my leukemia. I earned those benefits from working and contributing to the trust fund since I was 13. Some disabled people die before they get benefits. Others give up and don’t even challenge the first two denials of benefit appeals. That should be a more pressing need to correct. With the declining economy, undocumented immigrants are returning home on their own. It’s the racists such as Sheriff Hall who have turned the issue of immigration into one of inhumanity. If Nashvillians choose to leave Hall in office, then they should go down to Alabama and see if the late Bull Connor had any grandchildren. Then bring them up here to help to make the racism in the sheriff’s department complete. |
