Gov. Chris Christie plans to appeal the ruling, but he will lose. Same sex marriages are in the Garden State to stay.
Addicting Info
In light of the recent Supreme Court ruling that allowed gays the right to be just as miserable, a county judge in New Jersey feels that NJ gay couple should be able to marry despite Governor Christie’s opposition to it.
Judge Mary Jacobson of the Mercer County Superior Court ruled Friday that gay couples will be able to tie the knot in Joisey as soon as October 21.
“This unequal treatment requires that New Jersey extend civil marriage to same-sex couples to satisfy equal protection guarantees of the New Jersey Constitution as interpreted by the New Jersey Supreme Court in Lewis,” wrote the judge. “Same-sex couples must be allowed to marry in order to obtain equal protection of the law under the New Jersey Constitution.” (Huff Po)
Jacobson’s ruling accepted the notion that the state is blocking its gay citizens from receiving federal benefits. Christie is expected to appeal the decision.
New York, Maryland and Delaware have all legalized marriage equality, meaning New Jersey is the lone bigot amid a sandwich of tolerance. And if there’s one thing Christie has been consistent about, it’s been his love of sandwiches. But seriously, for a state that claims to be the ‘Garden State,’ the governor really seems to dislike fruit. Even if Christie maintains his outdated stance that same-sex marriage should be decided by a voter referendum, the tide is shifting and it doesn’t look like he’ll be able to bully officials much longer.
