BOB GRANT: 35 YEARS OF HATE IN NEW YORK

GrantWednesday, Sept. 21, 2005 will be a milestone in New York Radio history. It will be the 35th anniversary of the New York debut of radio host Bob “I don’t have any problem with the National Alliance” Grant. For those who have never heard of him, this is the guy who brought hate politics to a whole new level on radio. He started in 1970 on WMCA-AM, where he spent seven years before going to WOR, and later WWDB in Philadelphia. When he returned to New York and 77 WABC in 1984, he built the mad hate-mongering that inspired people like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage. He made no bones about his disdain for anyone who wasn’t white, and he supported anyone who would do anything to keep the “savages” from going any further in life. When African American David Dinkins won the Mayorship in New York, all of the conservative press went on overdrive to smear him throughout his term, paving the way for Rudolph Giuliani to become mayor and spend the next eight years making war with people of color. Bob Grant was at the forefront of this activity, and the controversy he generated got him put into syndication and a book deal.  Of course, all good things come to an end, especially for Nazis. He first caught hell in 1994 after New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg went after Chuck Haytaian, his opponent in that year’s Senate race, for counting Grant among his friends. Lautenberg won, and Grant began to see himself being marginalized by the mainstream. This brought on a rally in support of Grant in Trenton that included such luminaries such as the Nationalist Movement’s Dick Barrett and Hal Turner. Two years later, his hate routine cost him his gig at WABC, newly acquired by Disney from Capital Cities. A plane carrying then-Commerce Secretary Ron Brown, an African American, crashed, and Grant wished on the air that Brown was among those that perished, which was found later to have been the case. That pissed people off quite a bit and it was not going to be the way Disney wanted to be represented. Ten days after his firing, Grant was re-hired by his old station WOR to be heard locally in New York and nationally on The WOR Radio Network. Yes, he is still on the air today. He keeps his voice down, but as he gets closer to retirement, he is going back to his old line of bull. Back in May, the Daily News decided to laud his 57 years on the air, not touching on the kind of hate that he promoted over that time. As this particular anniversary approaches, we figured we let you hear for yourselves just what made Bob Grant the scumbag that he is, and then ask why does the Daily News feels the need to kiss his ass. These are audio files (MP3) of excerpted past shows from 1993-94 where Grant has gotten chummy with neo-Nazis, promoted their publications and music, and defended the notion of racial superiority. Some of the text describing the clips come from Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR), which has been going after Grant for years. Let’s be real: Grant is the last of a dying breed and he is not as relevant as he used to be, but if things are going to stay that way let us not forget what kind of scum people like him were.

Grant on his 23rd Anniversary in New York. On this clip, Grant talks of how if the “Bob Grant Mandatory Sterilization Program” was implemented back on Sept. 21, 1970 there would be less crime and welfare.

Bob Grant promotes Jared Taylor. On April 26, 1993, a caller praised the newsletter American Renaissance, which is described by its editor, Samuel Jared Taylor, as “racialist” and “from the point of view of the European majority.” The caller read a quote from the newsletter–“When neighborhoods lose their white majorities, schools decay, crime increases, taxes rise, welfare proliferates, and what was once an outpost of civilization subsides into barbarism”–and then asked Grant: “Can I give out the address?” After the caller was allowed to do so, Grant notes that the publisher of Taylor’s book sent them a letter saying that because of his program they have been able to increase sales.

Bob Grant and Tom Metzger. On the premiere of his nationally syndicated show (1/14/95), Grant provided a friendly forum for Tom Metzger, the prominent neo-Nazi who heads White Aryan Resistance (WAR). Identified by his full name on the air, Metzger joined Grant in demanding stern measures against Mexican immigrants.

Grant promotes Nazi music II. Other callers have asked for and been given permission to give out addresses where people can order “pro-white music.” One caller (4/25/94) gave out an address for an outfit called Angel’s Action Gear–an address shared by a neo-Nazi organization called the SS Action Group, as well as by the NAAWP. Another time, a caller gave out contact information for Wolfpack Services, another neo-Nazi outfit. Both Angel’s Action Gear and Wolfpack are defunct.

“Lee Harvey Oswald, where are you?” That came from a caller to Grant’s show regarding political officials. No rebuke from Grant.
