On July 29, 2010, scores of protests took place around the country to denounce Arizona’s SB1070 law, which was supposed to go into effect that day. While the “Papers Please” law did indeed do so, the “Papers Please” part as well as a few other controversial points in it were also struck down in federal court – for now. Those who came out wanted to make sure the country knew that while it was a time to celebrate, there was still more work to be done. Case in point: the racist Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpiao wanted to use SB1070 to extend his powers against communities of color, and was planning to do a “sweep” of those neighborhoods using the law. He was not able to conduct his sweep however, because the protests outside his jail prevented those plans from even happening. Meanwhile in Philadelphia, where One People’s Project is based, folks convened at Welcome Park to hold their demo of solidarity. It was one where the local elected officials including the Mayor and a few State Representatives come out. With so many people of difference colors, religions and cultures coming out to defend immigrants in this country, it was a refreshing sight to see after the prior week’s Whitefest (no, we will not apologize for that most apt term) over at Geno’s Steaks to defend SB1070. A note of correction. The Geno’s Steaks rally was held on July 14, as the caption notes, not the 15th as the voiceover says.
