We are sure the Phelps Family wants to be at every funeral they say they would protest. We are sure they wanted to do more than just Photoshop a picture of themselves at Whitney Houston’s funeral and pretend they were there. Let’s help them out, shall we?
One People’s Project
The Phelps Family has long been known for their “God Hate Fags” routines and the picketing the funerals of those they find objectionable. Things have changed dramatically. The protests have gone protesting funerals to promote their anti-gay agenda, to protesting high profile funerals to promote their anti-gay agenda, to protesting funerals to promote themselves. Over the course of the past few months however, they have gone to simply saying that they are going to protest a high profile funeral, but ultimately not showing up at all. They tweeted their plans to head out to the funerals of Apple founder Steve Jobs and later disgraced Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, not showing up at either. This week they took it a step further – pretending they were there.
When they announced they were going to protest the funeral of singer Whitney Houston (Editor’s note: It still sucks that we are writing those words – OPP), everyone was wondering how in the hell they were going to pull that off in Newark, NJ. We got our answer in a surreal way – via Photoshop and bogus tweets. During the course of the funeral, Marge Phelps took to Twitter and sent out tweets that said things like, “We shaking’ the NJ sidewalk up in here!”, “For those bitching about people who are watching the Houston funeral should keep in mind that Westboro is picketing there too.” and with an illustrative photo of the Phelps Family Protestors just outside the New Hope Baptist Church where the funeral was held, “All NJ & all who came to lie about Whitney’s Godless life saw these beauties! She’s in hell!”
The problem is this: The Newark Star-Ledger reports that they did not see any such protest at the funeral. In fact, no one was even allowed in the area where the picture was supposed to be taken. That means they doctored a photo to say that they were somewhere they ultimately were not. In short, they lied.
It seems like our friends at Westboro Baptist Church are at a crossroads. They are at a point where they just don’t feel like coming out anymore, but they still love the attention they get when they do. We are sure there might have also been other times that they wish they could have been able to protest – and we think you do too. So we decided to help everyone out. Feel free to take this picture of the Phelps Family and place them where you think they should go. That way, they can continue to cool their heels in Kansas and just drop themselves in whatever dream scenario protest they like. And since bearing false witness is a sin, we decided to start with one of them…
…in their natural habitat.
Send your submissions to us here, or post them somewhere online where we will find them (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc). The best ones will be posted on this site on Saturday.
