PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO—After eluding apprehension for almost a month on a probation violation, neo-Nazi Bill White was finally caught – and not in Iran, as he suggested on his Facebook page he had fled to.

The former editor of the white supremacist blog Overthow.com, White was found and arrested in this Mexican resort town an hour’s drive from Cancun Friday afternoon, a few weeks after a federal warrant was taken out in the western district of Virginia after he reportedly missed a scheduled check-in with his federal prohibition officer the week before and was not at home when that officer visited. The warrant charged him with supervised release violations. According to WSLS, his arrest was the result of a joint effort between the U.S. Marshalls’ Office and Mexican law enforcement officials.

White, who spent two years in jail for transmitting threats and obstruction of justice, had been released last year on April 20 – Adolph Hitler’s birthday – and eventually ended up writing for the American Free Press, an anti-Semitic newspaper published by Willis Carto. White spent his time on the run reportedly posting to his Facebook page, noting that he left the United States, even saying he defected to Tehran, Iran. Among the postings were a report about a threat towards the federal judge that incarcerated him at his home, support for Keystone State “Skinheads” member Steve Smith upon his election as a Luzerne County GOP Committeeman, and a long diatribe against his ex-wife Meghan. His last post on June 8 was a story about a US soldier in Afghanistan who might have deflected to the Taliban. “A million men in the US Army,” he wrote. “One has some sense.”

Given his reputation as a gloryhound and pathological liar, White was believed to be either still in Virginia or if not in the US somewhere in Mexico, where it is believed he had several bank accounts.

While a definite timeline has not been set for his return, White will be extradited first to Texas and then to Virginia.
