OXFORD, MS<\/strong> \u2014 Shortly after midnight on Wednesday morning a disturbance started near the center of the University of Mississippi campus, where students gathered to protest the Tuesday night re-election of President Barack Obama.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/span>Initial reports on Twitter labeled the gathering as a \u201criot,\u201d but observers said it was simply angry students assembled in protest.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/span>Students were heard shouting racial epithets about Obama and African Americans in general.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/span>Police were called to the scene and the crowd broke up around 12:30 a.m.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/span>A dispatcher with the university police department said he could not release any details on why police were called to campus.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

One Twitter user, @BIGSMOOV012, shared a photo that showed several students crowding into an intersection where police allegedly responded. The crowd did not appear to be doing anything but mulling around.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Twitter user @CaMeshaLaShay tweeted another photo showing young males burning an Obama\/Biden 2012 sign. It is unclear if this photo was taken on the Ole Miss campus.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>News Watch 99, the student-run news station, said there were no riots as once reported.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>The Daily Mississippian, the student newspaper, reported students were throwing rocks at cars and using racial slurs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
