(Pictured: Jack Hunter)<\/h3>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<h2><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/09\/neo-confederate-rand-paul-aide-a-daily-caller-c\/194784\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Media Matters for America<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Jack Hunter, a congressional aide to Sen. Rand Paul with a history of &#8220;neo-Confederate&#8221; and &#8220;pro-secessionist&#8221; views, has&nbsp;produced dozens of articles and&nbsp;video commentaries for The Daily Caller and&nbsp;appeared as what one Fox Business host termed a &#8220;regular&#8221; guest on that network. He also helped then-Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), currently the president of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/demint\/\">The Heritage Foundation<\/a>, write his most recent book.<\/p>\n<p>The conservative Free Beacon <a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/rebel-yell\/\">reported<\/a> today that Hunter, a &#8220;close&#8221; Rand Paul aide who also co-wrote the Kentucky Republican&#8217;s 2011 book, &#8220;spent years working as a pro-secessionist radio pundit and neo-Confederate activist &#8230; Hunter was a chairman in the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dixienet.org\/rights\/2012\/index.php\">League of the South<\/a>, which &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/dixienet.org\/rights\/corebeliefs.shtml\">advocates<\/a>&nbsp;the secession and subsequent independence of the Southern States from this forced union and the formation of a Southern republic.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Free Beacon also quoted Hunter&#8217;s South Carolina radio commentary under the pseudonym &#8220;The Southern Avenger&#8221; in which he expressed adoration for Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth, indignation that white Americans are treated to a &#8220;racial double standard,&#8221; and opposition to Spanish-speaking immigrants. Hunter reportedly &#8220;told the Free Beacon that he no longer holds many of these views,&#8221; including his pro-Lincoln assassin views, but &#8220;declined to say that he no longer supports secession.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Free Beacon&nbsp;further reported that &#8220;[d]uring public appearances, Hunter often wore a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=2482&amp;dat=20050106&amp;id=JkZJAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=wQkNAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=4095,1793531\">mask<\/a>&nbsp;on which was printed a Confederate flag&#8221; and included the following picture:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cloudfront.mediamatters.org\/static\/images\/item\/jackhuntermask.jpg\" height=\"232\" width=\"306\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While Free Beacon&#8217;s report was critical of Hunter and his association with Sen. Paul, it did not mention Hunter&#8217;s ties to The Daily Caller, Fox, and DeMint. The piece instead mentioned that Hunter had written for &#8220;paleoconservative websites such as the <em>American Conservative<\/em> and <em>Taki&#8217;s Magazine<\/em>,&#8221; and even quoted Jim Antle, editor of the Daily Caller News Foundation, who commented on Rand Paul&#8217;s efforts to &#8220;overcome that perception&#8221; that he is too close to fringe elements.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Daily Caller&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cloudfront.mediamatters.org\/static\/images\/item\/hunter-caller.JPG\" class=\"post-right\" height=\"265\" width=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hunter&#8217;s Daily Caller <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/author\/jhunter\/\">archive<\/a> lists more than 50 pieces from him between <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/author\/jhunter\/page\/3\/\">August 2011<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2013\/05\/06\/rand-paul-shatters-left-right-paradigm-can-help-grow-gop\/\">May 2013<\/a>, including numerous editions of a slickly-produced, Daily Caller-branded video commentary series, &#8220;The Deal with Jack Hunter.&#8221; His most recent Daily Caller <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2013\/05\/06\/rand-paul-shatters-left-right-paradigm-can-help-grow-gop\/#ixzz2YYpoE1s7\">piece<\/a> was published on May 6 and headlined, &#8220;Rand Paul shatters left-right paradigm, can help grow GOP.&#8221; In his written and video commentaries, Hunter regularly promoted the candidacy of Ron Paul, whose 2012 presidential campaign he <a href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/blog\/2011\/09\/20\/fox-business-hosts-daily-caller-contributor-to\/185828\">worked<\/a> for as an &#8220;official campaign blogger.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a February 2012 Daily Caller <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2012\/02\/24\/the-deal-with-jack-hunter-the-color-of-change-is-yellow-video\/#ixzz2YZ0AU8rE\">video<\/a>, Hunter argued &#8220;that by firing Pat Buchanan, MSNBC, Media Matters and the Color of Change have undermined free speech.&#8221; Daily Caller <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2012\/02\/24\/the-deal-with-jack-hunter-the-color-of-change-is-yellow-video\/\">has identified<\/a> Hunter as &#8220;known by his radio moniker the &#8216;Southern Avenger,'&#8221; and having appeared as &#8220;a frequent guest on Fox Business,&#8221; and collaborating with Sens. Paul and DeMint on their books.<\/p>\n<p>With the exception of the May 2013 piece, Hunter&#8217;s work for the Daily Caller subsided in August 2012, when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legistorm.com\/person\/Jack_W_Hunter\/200954.html\">he joined<\/a> Rand Paul&#8217;s congressional staff. Hunter has continued to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/author\/jack-hunter\/\">write regularly<\/a> for <em>The American Conservative<\/em> since that time.<\/p>\n<p>Daily Caller contributor Matt Lewis wrote a <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2013\/07\/09\/damaging-staffer-admission-rand-paul-is-just-playing-a-game\/#ixzz2YZApSmPc\">post<\/a> after the publication of the Free Beacon story criticizing Paul&#8217;s association with Hunter, writing: &#8220;It&#8217;s one thing to have an aide with baggage (even very bad baggage), but the larger problem here is that this also speaks to credibility and honesty &#8212; to Paul&#8217;s fundamental character.&#8221; Lewis did not mention that Hunter has written for his site.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: In an&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2013\/07\/09\/rand-paul-aide-and-co-author-john-wilkes-booth-was-right\/\">article<\/a>&nbsp;published shortly after this post, The Daily Caller reported on the controversy over Hunter&#8217;s remarks and acknowledged that he &#8220;has also contributed opinion pieces to The Daily Caller.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Fox Business<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to a search of the Nexis database, Hunter appeared as a guest on Fox Business&#8217; <em>Freedom Watch<\/em> more than twenty times between March 14, 2011, and February 13, 2012. <em>Freedom Watch<\/em> was hosted by Fox News senior judicial analyst Andrew Napolitano and was cancelled in February 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Hunter often used his appearances to promote Ron Paul&#8217;s presidential campaign. In <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/embed\/static\/clips\/2013\/07\/09\/30917\/fbn-freedomwatch-20110420-napolitanohunter\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one appearance<\/a>, Hunter criticized progressives for &#8220;want[ing] to tie concepts like nullification or even secession, if you wanted to go that radical a route, to slavery, racism, segregation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Napolitano, who is <a href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/blog\/2011\/09\/20\/fox-business-hosts-daily-caller-contributor-to\/185828\">close friends with the Paul family<\/a>, introduced him at times as a &#8220;<em>Freedom Watch<\/em> regular&#8221; and a &#8220;good friend of the show.&#8221; On-screen text explained he was &#8220;sometimes known as the &#8216;Southern Avenger.'&#8221; Fox also identified Hunter as a &#8220;Daily Caller contributor&#8221; and writer:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/static\/images\/item\/20130709post-biofbnhunter.jpg\" height=\"272\" width=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Jim DeMint<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cloudfront.mediamatters.org\/static\/images\/item\/hunter-demint.jpg\" class=\"post-right\" height=\"200\" width=\"300\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hunter helped write Jim DeMint&#8217;s most recent 2012 book, <em>Now or Never: Saving America from Economic Collapse<\/em>. DeMint <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Now-Never-America-Economic-Collapse\/dp\/B00BJY0KUQ\">writes<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/static\/images\/item\/20130709post-amazondemint.jpg\">acknowledgements page<\/a>: &#8220;I would like<br \/>\n to thank my editor and collaborator, Jack Hunter, who contributed his writing skills and passion for freedom to make this book more readable and insightful.&#8221; Hunter also <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=Ff_ipLCfRPUC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;pg=PT135#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">wrote a chapter<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/townhall.com\/columnists\/marycrookston\/2012\/01\/13\/now_or_never_saving_america_from_economic_collapse\/page\/full\">introduction<\/a> in the book. The book features a foreword by Sen. Rand Paul. DeMint is currently the head of the Heritage Foundation, which was recently <a href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/13\/what-the-handling-of-jason-richwine-says-about\/194027\">forced to fire<\/a> Jason Richwine, the co-author of its immigration study, after <a href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/10\/heritage-cant-spin-away-its-anti-hispanic-immig\/194009\">past racist<\/a> writings <a href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/08\/heritage-report-author-hispanic-immigrants-may\/193962\">were revealed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hunter&#8217;s website, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southernavenger.com\/\">southernavenger.com<\/a>, includes the graphic &#8220;As Seen On&#8221; and images that include Fox Business and The Daily Caller.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/static\/images\/item\/20130709post-hunterasseenon.jpg\" height=\"99\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In February 2013, Glenn Beck&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.glennbeck.com\/2013\/02\/27\/can-people-who-believe-in-liberty-come-together\/\">hosted<\/a>&nbsp;Hunter on his TV program as one of &#8220;three prominent libertarians&#8221; there to discuss &#8220;how people who believe in peace and freedom can come together and push the country back towards the Constitution and away from big government.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In other news, dog bites man and water is wet.
