This is one of those times where the person compared to David Duke can’t do the outrage thing. Tony Perkins once bought Duke’s mailing list for a campaign and was fined for trying to hide it, spoke before the Louisiana Chapeter fo the Council of Conservative Citizens<\/a> and for good measure, led his Family Research Center into a hate group designation by the Southern Poverty Law Center. No wonder Fox News loves him so much.<\/h3>\n

A Republican Louisiana lawmaker criticized the prospect of Family Research Council head Tony Perkins<\/a> being one of his opponents in an upcoming congressional primary, reportedly comparing Perkins to former Ku Klux Klan member David Duke.<\/p>\n

The New Orleans Times-Picayune<\/em> reported on Wednesday<\/a> that state Sen. Dan Claitor (R) confirmed he will run to represent the state\u2019s 6th District in 2014.<\/p>\n

But while confirming his candidacy, Claitor also told the Times-Picayune<\/em> that he was \u201cnot excited\u201d by the prospect of other party members on the ballot \u201chaving questionable associations with certain hate groups,\u201d then allegedly compared Perkins to Duke, a former Grand Wizard in the Klan who made headlines in 1991 for his failed gubernatorial campaign.<\/a> He later served as a state lawmaker, and in 2011 mounted an unsuccessful attempt<\/a> to gain support for a presidential bid.<\/p>\n

The Times-Picayune<\/em> reported<\/a> on Nov. 29 that Perkins has not decided to enter the campaign, but was approached by \u201cbusiness and political leaders\u201d and asked to consider doing so. Perkins reportedly met with a group of 35 pastors to discuss the matter.<\/p>\n

However, the Christian Post<\/em> reported on Friday<\/a> that Perkins issued a statement criticizing House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) for calling on party members to support gay candidates for office, saying it distracted the party from mobilizing against the Affordable Care Act.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the purpose of the Republican platform if the party isn\u2019t looking for candidates who uphold it?\u201d Perkins\u2019 statement read. \u201cThe GOP\u2019s latest sideshow comes at the expense of the party\u2019s greatest opportunity: capitalizing on America\u2019s disgust for Obamacare.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe GOP will throw its support behind any candidate they believe can win, even if it means throwing the party\u2019s stated principles overboard,\u201d Perkins\u2019 statement read. He also added, \u201c\u201dYou can\u2019t build a bigger tent if someone is sawing down one of the poles.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which has designated Perkins\u2019 organization as a hate group for its stance<\/a> against LGBT rights,<\/a> noted Claitor\u2019s apparent jibe at him, saying on Friday,<\/a> \u201cIt\u2019s encouraging that Perkins\u2019 record of extremism is drawing scrutiny even before he enters the race.
